Our department is delighted to inform you that Dr. Nilmi Fernando will officially commence her three-year tenure as the On-Campus Advisor of the Chemistry Club at Georgia State University, an American Chemical Society Student Affiliate Chapter, on January 1st, 2025. Dr. Fernando has been the Associate On-Campus Advisor of the GSU Chemistry Club since 2016. The primary objective of this organization is to foster an interest in chemistry among undergraduate students of any declared major. The Department of Chemistry sincerely thanks Dr. Thota for her unwavering dedication and long-term service as the Faculty Advisor of the GSU Chemistry Club. Under her guidance and many other remarkable achievements, the club has experienced significant growth, expanding its membership from approximately 50 to over 150 individuals. Additionally, the club has increased the number of professional development seminars it organizes, hosting approximately six events per semester. Furthermore, Dr. Thota has successfully sponsored undergraduate students attending conferences and leadership events, and the club has consistently participated in booths at the Atlanta Science Festival Expo and Discovery Day, welcoming several thousand visitors. As a student affiliate chapter of the American Chemical Society, the GSU Chemistry Club has received numerous accolades, including six Commendable Chapters, two Certificates of Achievement, seven Honorable Mentions, and an Outstanding Chapter in the 2022-23 academic year. We eagerly anticipate collaborating with Dr. Fernando to further strengthen the Chemistry Club and amplify its impact at Georgia State University.
