Happy 2010 New Year (CAPA Statement)!
Dear CAPA Members and Friends:
Happy New Year! We are glad that our CAPA and members/friends had a successful year in 2009. Your supports and participations are extremely valuable and important to our CAPA association (http://chemistry.gsu.edu/faculty/Huang/chinese-american_chemistry_professor_association.htm). CAPA activities in 2009 include the LanZhou conference, the CAPA annual meeting, and the dinner gatherings, which have been smoothly held because of your strong support and participation. Thank you! Moreover, we have successfully collaborated with the journal (Science China: Chemistry) to publish the first special issue/report on the CAPA activities/conference series. Since we have had a productive collaboration on this special issue (the first issue of Science China in 2010) with Science China, they are considering to work with us again. This is a good opportunity to further promote the CAPA, members/friends, and our activities.
Our CAPA association gives us good opportunities to network and build up strong friendship and support. It is our great pleasure to serve and promote our CAPA members/friends/faculty and the other oversea Chinese professors/scholars in US, China, and worldwide.
We would also like to take this New Year opportunity to congratulate one of our CAPA Board Members, Prof. Zhonglin Wang, at Georgia Institute of Technology (http://www.nanoscience.gatech.edu/zlwang/wang.html) , for his election to Chinese National Academy of Sciences as a foreign member (one of 6 foreign members elected worldwide this year, http://www.cas.cn/xw/zyxw/yw/200912/t20091204_2682287.shtml), a richly deserved honor. Prof. Zhonglin Wang is among the world's top 10 most cited authors in nanotechnology and is one of the most well known researchers in materials science and nanotechnology in the world.
Many people have told us that our professional organization (CAPA) is very important and critical to this unique professional community. Our members/associate members are over 300. It will be great to continue and expand our tradition and success. Our new website will be ready soon, which should make our communication and updating little easier. We will continue this good-and-great work, which we started in 2002. For this year (2010), we have planned the 6th CAPA Conference (June 15-17, Hang Zhou) in China, the 2nd CAPA Annual National Conference (July 30-August 2, San Diego, CA) in USA, and the dinner gatherings during the American Chemical Society National Meetings (details to be announced). Currently, we are working on our new website. When it is done, you can upload your contact and research information to our website later.
Wish All of You A Happy, Healthy and Productive Year in 2010!

Serving CAPA Statement (May 12, 2008)
Dear CAPA Members and Friends:
We would like to thank you for your trust and the CAPA election committee's effort. We are excited and proud of having this opportunity to serve you and our association.
As we all know, Chinese-Americans are playing increasingly important roles in various strategic entities in this country including chemical and bio-tech industries, financial sectors, high-tech and pharmaceutical industries, and research and education institutions. This is particularly true in the chemistry and chemical biology areas. According to a conservative estimation, there are over 1000 Chinese-American chemistry & chemical biology professors working in various research universities and institutes in this country. To effectively serve and connect the Chinese-American chemistry & chemical biology professors, we formed our association (CAPA) six years ago. Last year, we formally registered this organization in the State of Georgia with Lin Pu, Binghe Wang, and Zhen Huang as the three founding members and officers. Over the past four years, we organized the CAPA-ACS symposia twice: New York (2003) and Boston (2007), and the Sino-US Chemistry Professors Conferences three times in China: Tianjing University (2005), Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (2006), and Wuhan University (2007). This year, the 4th Sino-US Chemistry Professors Conference will be hosted by Peking University in June 12-13. With your strong supports, we will continue our tradition of excellences, further explore new opportunities and activities for our members and Association, and provide more services to our members and friends.
We will strengthen our efforts in (1) promoting communications, (2) providing peer supports, (3) collectively identifying and addressing common concerns uniquely facing Chinese-American chemistry & chemical biology professors, and (4) promoting worldwide academic exchanges and student/scholar exchanges, and providing collaboration opportunities in the general field of chemistry and chemical biology between those in US institutions and those in Chinese-speaking countries and regions. In particular, we will help to build connections with Chinese education agencies, universities and research institutions, which financially support exchange programs for student/scholar oversea training in research laboratories. We will organize the CAPA-ACS symposium every second year. We also keep the annual Sino-US Chemistry Professors Conference series running smoothly.
In addition, since there is a large base of potential memberships, we will work with our current members to reach out to other Chinese-American chemistry & chemical biology professors in order to further increase the number of our members. Furthermore, we will work with our members to further reach out to other associations, such as the ACS, CACS, SAPA, and Chinese Chemical Society in China, via meetings, conferences and other activities. Through public out-reaching, we will work with our members to further increase the positive image and visibility of CAPA and Chinese-American in the society. Moreover, in order to assist our junior professor members, we will organize a mentor group and have senior professor members to share their personal career-developing experiences, including grant writing, lab managing, project organizing, paper publishing and networking. By working together, we will provide junior faculty members with additional helps and resources from the senior members outside their own departments and institutions, and we will arrange one-on-one match between junior and senior faculty.
By working together with our members, we are confident that our association will play an important and significant role in the scientific community and public society. It is our honor and pleasure to serve our CAPA association. Thanks for your trusts and supports.

Pictures and news of the CAPA Award and Spring Gathering, ACS National Meeting (March 23, 2010)
Dear CAPA members and friends,
During the Spring
2010 ACS National Meeting in San Francisco, about a
dozen of CAPA members, friends, and family members gathered together for
a joyful dinner on Tuesday, March 23rd to celebrate another successful
year and the achievements of two CAPA Distinguished Junior Faculty Award

Pictures and news of the 1st CAPA annual conference, July 31-Aug. 3, 2009.
Dear CAPA members and friends,
The 1st CAPA Annual National Conference (7/31-8/2, 2009) was more than a success. A brief self-introduction of each attendee kicked off the conference. It ensured the very casual and intimate atmosphere that floated around throughout the conference.
The presentations were full of brilliant ideas and discussions – a result of diverse backgrounds of all participants. There was not a single presentation ended up with mere applauds but not deep discussions. Many times, a single question would trigger a full-fledged discussion on a much broader aspect. Understandably, the scheduled conference time was never enough. Therefore, workshops on the first day's schedule were moved outside – we gathered around shaded pool-side patio tables, with Atlantic Ocean beach only steps away (check the photo). Like all other junior faculty members, I benefited from the precious experiences/advises shared by senior members. Thanks to Zhen, Wei, Peter and Zucai. On the second day, fortunately the conference room was available for our extended hours. The only regret was that, we had to see off several members before the conference conclusion, as they had to start their journey back that afternoon.
We'd also like to express our appreciation to everyone who organized this conference. The location is well selected for all members and their families. We all had a very joyful memory about the science, the people, and the scenic view of the Hilton Head Island. I am looking forward to the conference next summer.

A Brief Report about the CAPA-ACS Symposium in Boston, 8-19-2007
Dear Friends,
Thanks for attending the second symposium organized by the Chinese-American
Chemistry & Chemical Biology Professors Association (CAPA) on Aug. 19, 2007,
Boston. Fourteen speakers from universities nationwide spoke about their
struggle, frustration, success, and satisfaction in their career development.
These personal stories and experiences are extremely encouraging. Due to the
off-site location of our conference, approximately 40 people total attended this
one-day ACS symposium in Boston. We are very grateful to the speakers and their
extremely high quality talks. The speakers are Zhaohui Sunny Zhou (Northeastern
University), Li Deng (Brnadies University), Xiangming Guan (South Dakota State
University), Jun O. Liu (Johns Hopkins School of Medicine), Lei Zhu (Florida
State University), Ken Li (Chiral Quest, Inc.), Wenbin Lin (University of North
Carolina), Zhongwu Guo, (Wayne State University), Jie Liu (Duke University),
Linghao Zhong (Pennsylvania State University at Mont Alto),
Longqin Hu (Rutgers University), Yi Lu (University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign), and Zhen Huang (Georgia State University). At the end of the
symposium, the CAPA Distinguished Junior Faculty Awards were presented to Xi
Chen and Chuan He by Xiangming Guan and Yi Lu, respectively (the pictures will
be uploaded on the website later).
We would also like to thank several organizations and individuals for their help. Without their help and sponsorship, this symposium would not have been possible. These organizations are ACS-Division of Professional Relations, and the Sino-American Pharmaceutical Professionals Association (SAPA New England Chapter). You are encouraged to join the SAPA and the Division of Professional Relations when you renew your ACS membership next year. In addition, we want to thank the session Chairs (Xiangming Guan, Li Deng and Zhen Huang). Furthermore, we would also like to thank our sponsors, Chiral Quest, Lab Scientific Group, Welch Materials, Kemtech America, SAPA-NE, Sichuan Garden Restaurant. Kemtech and its sales have promised a special glassware discount for CAPA members.
This symposium was followed by the CAPA and SAPA dinner banquet; approximately
40 people enjoyed a wonderful banquet at the Sichuan Restaurant (Sichuan Garden
Restaurant). The restaurant owner offered us over 10 bottles of wine free of
charge, and also allowed us to enjoy their Karaoke equipment (also free of
charge). Ken Li (General Manager of Chiral Quest) shared his
recent entrepreneur experience in China at the banquet. Many symposium
speakers and over 15 CAPA members enjoyed the banquet. The evening was relaxing
and enjoyable---- a great time to make new friends and to share mutual interests
in grants writing, career development, networking, research collaboration, etc.
During this ACS national meeting in Boston, many CAPA members have expressed
their strong support for organizing this type of professional activities, which
promote personal interactions and communications. In order to meet the unique
needs of Chinese American Chemistry Professors, we will continue to organize
this type of professional activities in the future (maybe every two years
instead of every 4 years). If you have suggestions regarding how to organize
future activities, how to organize the association, and how to work closely with
other organizations, please let us know.
We also need to formalize the Association soon. We need volunteers to join the Association board and serve as the Board Members. Please let us know if you are interested in this and willing to spend your time for the Association. We want to thank Peng George Wang in advance for willing to prepare a list of all Chinese-American Chemistry & Chemical Biology professors in all research active universities and institutes, which will help us reaching out to many other potential members.
Have a Productive and Enjoyable Fall Semester,
Zhen Huang, Binghe Wang and Lin Pu

Recent Activities:
Chinese Americans are playing an increasingly important role in various US educational institutions. This is particularly true in the chemistry profession. To effectively connect the Chinese-American chemistry & chemical biology professors, we formed an association, called "Chinese-American Chemistry & Chemical Biology Professors Association”, five years ago (CAPA, http://chemistry.gsu.edu/faculty/Huang/chinese-american_chemistry_professor_association.htm). The aims of this association include (1) promoting communications, (2) peer support, (3) collectively identifying and addressing common concerns uniquely facing Chinese American chemistry professors, and (4) promoting academic exchanges in the general field of chemistry between US institutions and those in Chinese-speaking countries and regions. We have organized many dinner gatherings at ACS national meetings and the annual Sino-US Chemistry Professors Conference series with the inaugural conference hosted by Tianjing University in 2005, followed by the second meeting at Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry in 2006. This year’s meeting was successfully hosted by Wuhan University. The 4th Sino-US Chemistry Professors Conference has been planned and will be hosted by Peking University in 2008. The details will be announced later.
Chinese-American Chemistry & Chemical Biology Professors Association (CAPA)
This association was formed by Chinese-American
professors in chemistry and biological chemistry in 2001. Over one hundred professors have
joined the association (http://chemistry.gsu.edu/faculty/Huang/chinese-american_chemistry_professor_association.htm). Based on their research interests, six groups are
formed.
This association is non-for-profit and
apolitical. The primary goal of this association is to promote networking and
information exchanges among overseas Chinese academic community. Interactions
and activities will be organized at different meetings, such as ACS national
meetings. Through interaction in a relax environment (such as a dinner party),
the association benefits the members in networking, friendship, and knowledge in
different research fields related to chemistry and chemical Biology.
If you are interested, please briefly describe your research area and e-mail it to Binghe Wang (Wang@gsu.edu), Lin Pu (lp6n@unix.mail.virginia.edu), or Zhen Huang (Huang@gsu.edu). You are also encouraged to forward this message to your faculty friends in the fields; they may be interested in joining this association. Thank you.
