Center for Biotechnology and Drug Design

At Georgia State University

GOALS OF THE CENTER

The Center for Biotechnology and Drug Design (BDD) at Georgia State University was established in order to contribute to the economic development of the Atlanta metropolitan area and the State of Georgia through the:

The advent of genetic engineering and molecular modeling techniques has revolutionized the natural sciences. Studies utilizing recombinant DNA technology and drug design have been resposible not only for our rapid progress in understasnding inherited diseases, AIDS and tumor formation, but also for the ability of biotechnology companies to massproduce previously scarce compounds of commercial importance. In the United States alone, more than 1,100 companies have made substantial investments in biotechnology, with more than $2.3 billion spent annually on biotechnology related research and development.

An overview of the BDD's Core Facilities

CENTER FACULTY

The BDD group is headed by 19 faculty members from the departments of biology and chemistry at Georgia State University. Research projects directed by these faculty range from the detailed structural analysis of small DNA molecules to the development of genetically engineered vaccines against viral infection. Faculty research interests are focused in the three general catagories listed below.
