1. The first tier is a local-level which can be administered on site at high schools provided there is an instructor willing to administer it.
2. The second tier is the national level, where 13 Georgia students come to Kennesaw State University to take the exam.
3. The third tier is the international level which involves the U.S. study camp and possible selection to the international competition.

The Chemistry Olympiad is an event sponsored by the National ACS to promote chemistry at the high school level and also to help identify and choose the four member USA team for participation in the International High School Chemistry Olympiad.

The Olympiad was first administered by the Georgia Section in 1989 by Beatriz Cardelino (Section Chair at the time). Jeanette Adams (Emory University) re-instituted the event in 1992, and Theresa Chamblee (The Coca-Cola Company) became coordinator in 1993-1997. 

The Olympiad begins with a two hour test given at the individual high schools. Over 380 students from 24 schools in Georgia participated in 1997. The top scoring 11 students are then eligible to compete in the National test which consists of a half day of testing: multiple choice, long answer problems and a one hour laboratory practical examination. 

The laboratory practical portion of the test was first instituted by the national ACS in 1994. Cindy and Hank Brittain (then of Kennesaw College) administered the first laboratory practical examination in Georgia with the help of Alan Gabrielli. The laboratory practical portion of the Olympiad then moved to Southern Polytechnic University (Southern Tech in Marietta, GA) with Alan in 1995 and is still held there. 

Brian Seifried, who participated in our Section's Chemistry Olympiad at Kennesaw State University, was selected for the 2009 Chemistry Olympiad Study Camp. His chemistry teacher is Pamela Gilbert-Smith at Chamblee High School.
