Items of Business
- The previous business minutes (sent out August 27, 1999)
were unanimously approved.
- Terry Say notified the meeting that Margaret Venables wished
to resign as the Business Manager of the Filter Press. Brian
Fowler has offered to fill that position. A meeting will be held
to ensure a smooth transition.
- The treasurer's report was read by Angus Wilkinson. The balance
was favorable for 1999. He indicated the need for a small committee
to reduce costs\increase revenue with respect to the publication
and distribution of the Filter Press. T. Say indicated that he
and A. Wilkinson, B. Fowler, and M. Venables would assemble to
discuss this subject.
- Kathie Seley indicated that all speaker slots for 2000 are
filled, venue would alternate between Georgia Tech and the Marietta
Wyndham Garden Hotel.
- Deanna Hall and Terry Say presented progress to date with
the Members Database. They plan to put out a questionnaire in
The Filter Press, electronic and hard-copy, to determine local
section interest for such a data base.
- A motion to eliminate the annual picnic from the 2000 budget
due to lack of interest, was made, seconded, and approved by
acclamation.
- The Herty Committee report by Lihong D'Angelo was made in
proxy by Terry Say. Requests for submissions have been sent out.
The Herty Committee consists of L. D'Angelo, R. Hernandez, S.
Hornbuckle and L. Dulany.
- The COLGA Committee report by Tom Netzel was made in proxy
by Terry Say.
- Bill McGonigal's K-12 report was made in proxy by Terry Say.
The Meeting felt that we do not have sufficient contact with
Chemistry teachers in our area to offer them our help and support.
Deanna Hall and Susan Hornbuckle will explore ways of increasing
this contact.
- The representatives from the Macon area presented their case
for a Middle Georgia Section, due to the distance from the Atlanta
area. A motion to establish a Middle Georgia Section Committee
was made, seconded and approved by acclamation. The Committee
was given approval by the Board to query members in that area
about establishing a Middle Georgia Section. It was decided to
allocate $2,000 to the Committee to enable them to hold some
meetings to help establish the viability of a section in that
area. Terry Say offered to attend some of these meetings.
- Harry Hopkins' SERMACS 2003 report was made in proxy by Terry
Say. Two volunteers have stepped forward so far, their names
will be forwarded to Harry. Angus Wilkinson needs to know what
funds will be requested for organizing SERMACS 2003, as some
of the Section Funds are in CDs.
- Terry Say read a letter to the meeting from Attila Pavlath,
ACS President-Elect, requesting input from the Local Sections
on how to make the ACS more relevant to its Members. Terry requested
all Board Members to send him their thoughts on the subject.
- Terry Say proposed having quarterly Board Meetings, dates
presented - April 26, July 26, October 25.
New Business
- Terry Say would like to explore the possibility of setting
up Focus Groups, eg. Analytical Chemistry, within the Section
to increase member participation. This will be explored via a
questionnaire in the Filter Press.
- Brain Fowler is interested in expanding the Section's activities
with respect to career planning, etc.
