Career Development: How can the ACS help you?
The Market Place Perspective

Jean Parr, Head of the ACS Department of Career Services

Brian Fowler, Elite Search

Knowledge of the employment outlook for chemical scientists is crucial when seeking new career and job opportunities. The era when you could depend on a career at one company, with promotions and pay increases, is long gone. In her presentation, Ms. Parr will report on recent data collected by the ACS Department of Career Services about chemistsÕ salaries and employment trends. She will introduce the many career resources the ACS makes available to members and student affiliates, and in particular will give a live demonstration of the newly launched Online Professional Data Bank. Regardless of where you are in your career, there is something for you from Career Services.

Presenting the right image and catching a recruiterÕs attention is essential when searching and applying for a new job. Mr Fowler will discuss issues important to job candidates and offer insight on developing a search support network.

Both these lectures will offer plenty of good advice to soon-to-graduate students, recently ÒdownsizedÓ chemists or anyone wishing to develop their career.

Jean Parr is Head of the ACS Department of Career Services, which is responsible for programs designed to enhance the professional and economic status of chemical professionals. She directs the activities of the SocietyÕs employment services and career development programs, such as the Career Resource Center at national and regional ACS meetings, annual salary surveys, career consultant program, local section career programs, and career related workshops, publications and videos. Additionally she serves as the Staff Liaison to the ACS Committee on Economic and Professional Affairs. She has been with the ACS since 1981, spending the first ten years in the Department of Government Relations and Science Policy and five years as Head of Membership Activities.

Brian Fowler is a senior recruiter with Elite Search, a permanent and contract recruiting firm with an emphasis on scientific positions ranging from entry level to executive management. Clients range from small business operations to Fortune 100 companies and include the areas of pharmaceuticals, medical device, food and beverage, pulp and paper, ink and paint, environmental science and specialty chemicals. With regard to candidates, Elite works with high caliber individuals who are ready to make a career move and equips them with the knowledge necessary to job hunt and interview in todayÕs competitive environment.

Chair's Message

As reported in Tom Netzel's chair's message in April, about 29% of our members hold non-academic positions. Your local section is pursuing several directions aimed at serving this sizable group by providing opportunities in which all of us have common interests. The March meeting focusing on the interfaces between industry and academia drew a particularly large audience with many members from both sides of industry and academia. Clearly you, the members, have an interest in learning from each other.

One way your local section can assist you is by providing training and development workshops in a certain technique or subdiscipline of chemistry. If enough of you share a particular need, we should be able either to use the existing distance learning modules provided to us by the ACS, or develop a workshop that will provide you with this knowledge at a fraction of the cost that a third-party enterprise would charge. Our chair-elect, Terry Say, has kindly offered to act as an industrial liaison. (E-mail Terry at terrysay@aol.com.) In this capacity, he will serve the needs of our industrial members as well as provide the section with a voice in creating new opportunities with industry. He will also coordinate the workshops. Please let us know which areas of training you need, and whether you wish to be a part of the organizing committee for the workshops.

Another example of our attempt both to serve our industrial members and integrate them with our academic members is this month's meeting. Terry Say has organized a very useful program on career development spearheaded by Jean Parr, the head of the ACS Department of Career Services. During this meeting we will also honor are graduating college seniors. They are at the beginning stages of their career development, and their presence should draw a mix of academic and non-academics. I suspect that we will find much in common in our professional concerns.

Your local section wants to provide you with services that can be of use to you. If you are in a non-academic position, please let us know what you need --- don't forget to check us out on the web at to receive updates on our programs and volunteer opportunities.
