Womens Chemist Committee: The mission of this committee is to attract women to careers in the chemical sciences; provide resources for career development; and to promote the acknowledgement of the accomplishments of women chemists and chemical engineers. There will be a series of articles/interviews with women scientists and an article about mentoring that will appear in the next issue of the WCC Newsletter and on the web page. I led a breakfast for (mainly) women in industry, which had the topic of "Leadership Styles." Madeline Jacobs, the editor-in-chief of C&EN, spoke at the WCC luncheon. In Anaheim, I will be coordinating a symposium about "Mergers and Spin-offs, How to Survive and Thrive." This will cover different aspects of either choosing to stay or go (when one has a choice) in this age of corporate mergers and spin-offs, but will have useful information for anyone regarding career development. One does not have to be a councilor to serve on a committee. The local WCDS may be reforming: contact JoAnn Mei for more information (jvm@cdc.gov)
Divisional Activities Committee: This committee provides assistance to the Divisions in the ACS. Current projects include the completion of a generic Division Procedures Manual, and orchestrating the annual Divisional officers Training Courses (very similar to LS officers Training). Divisions are responsible for the technical programming that occurs at ACS and other affiliated meetings. They are a useful means to staying in touch with your technology area, and being connected while moving around the country.
In addition to this, I am on a sub-committee of DAC that is planning the focus for the Spring, 2000 National ACS Meeting: looking to the future all aspects of the chemical landscape (research, education, industry, public outreach). Activities will include several plenary lectures/presentations (incorporating the Presidential Events for that meeting), and a public outreach event geared toward the impact of chemistry on everyday life in the 21st century.
Several other issues from the Council meeting, or related to ACS business:
· Divisions currently are represented by only 20% of the councilors on the Council, and they are interested (highly) in more representation. A taskforce is being formed to propose alternatives.
· Voting by electronic mail: a pilot program is being launched for the Inorganic Division to have the option of casting their ballots by email (a mail ballot will be sent; this will be one of the options for response). In order for other divisions and local sections to pursue this option, they are requested to examine their by-laws to determine whether these would allow this type of response (the entity would have to develop their own method of ballot checks), and then to submit their proposed by-law change (if required) to the Committee on Constitution and By-laws BEFORE voting on it, and C&B will advise on acceptable wording. In addition, the committee on Nominations and Elections is looking at a wholesale change in voting procedure to put before the entire society.
· VOTE!!
